They became popular in the US after WWII. People built them from aluminium from damaged airplanes and got the wheels from scrapped military jeeps. Very simple to make and with room for a double bed and a kitchen at the back, perfect for extended road trips at a fraction of the cost of an Airstream full-size trailer.
